Exploded Film Quilt and Nipple Film Quilt

Jennifer West’s subject and material is film. West manipulates it in every way possible physically and conceptually; inventing new ways through her highly regarded expressionist and performative practice. She often begins by affecting the raw film (35mm, 16mm and 70mm depending) in many various ways in advance of any image making by marinating, smoking, scratching, biting, dragging, snapping, spraying, throwing and dripping. In some cases West will then shoot narrative action and in other examples will use varying materials to make non-representational films. Depending on the content and subject of the film West selects materials she thinks connect to that subject and employs them into the work and onto the film. These can include non-visual materials such as perfumes, breast milk, incense, sunscreen, sweat, and liquid LSD but in all cases the materials are contained within the work’s title so the viewer is given an option of “seeing” the invisible.

West’s recent Seattle Art Museum exhibition held the title “Film is Dead…” and her project is deeply interested in this transitional moment in film from analogue to digital. The two works on exhibition Exploded Film Quilt and Nipple Film Quilt (both 2015) incorporate film as material. They are constructed out of the actual manipulated film stock West used to make various films drawing our attention to the physicality of the material and medium and its tenuous future. West has sewn the film, using its sprockets, into curtains that hang on the wall and her use of “quilts” for the title and construction underscore the history of this analogue material.

Over the past ten years West has gained international recognition for her explorations of materialism in film. Over the last year, West has presented four solo exhibitions internationally: Is Film Over? at Yuz Museum, Shanghai, China; Action Movies, Painted Films and History Collage at MAN Museum, Nouro, Sardinia, Italy; Film is Dead… at Seattle Art Museum; and Flashlight Filmstrip Projections at Tramway, Glasgow, Scotland. Flashlight Filmstrip Projections, which originally debuted at Portland Institute of Contemporary Art’s Time Based Art Festival in 2014, also traveled to Microscope Gallery, New York in 2016 as part of the Whitney Museum’s Dreamlands: Expanded, curated by Chrissie Iles. In addition to the major new works commissioned by the Seattle Art Museum and Tramway, she also completed a feature film for ICA London’s Art Night in July of 2016.
